Although the motivation (to save a query) is noble, it's a complex special case relying on subtle inter-module effects, making the code quite unclear and the performance advantage hard to reproduce in new code. * r41081 was causing the job queue to be flooded with tiny htmlCacheUpdate jobs which were less than the batch size and so, according to the original logic, should have been done immediately. This was causing template updates to be delayed even when the template has few backlinks. This is fixed. * Introduced a shared cache called BacklinkCache with the main purpose of sharing data from these backlink queries, thus recovering the performance of r41081. * Refactored backlink partitioning code, which in r40741 was copied from HTMLCacheUpdate to LinksUpdate with a bug intact. The bug caused every htmlCacheUpdate or refreshLinks2 job to be split into at least two pieces even when number of rows is less than the batch size. * Fixed a bug from r40741 causing refreshLinks2 jobs with end=false to be ignored. * Made SquidUpdate::newFromTitles() accept a TitleArray

Add experimental new auth framework, ExternalAuth This should not affect any existing behavior. (Except that it reorders some error conditions in attemptAutoCreate(), but probably no one cares about that.) It adds a new database table, but it will be unused unless you enable external authentication. An outline of the rationale for this system, and the design planning, is at <http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/ExternalAuth>. Essentially, AuthPlugin puts too much of a burden on plugin authors, requiring them to write a lot of policy logic instead of just handling the actual interface to the external user database. This system uses a standard framework to decide policy questions, and auth plugins only need to provide some low-level, clearly-specified data. There are lots of features still missing, marked in the code, but basic functionality is present. The commit includes initial support for one type of external authentication, the forum software vBulletin (which I happen to know well, and want to integrate with my MediaWiki). I'm encouraging the inclusion of ExternalAuth plugins in core because in this framework, the amount of code required to add an additional backend is quite small -- well under 100 lines in this case. I'd hope to see a lot more of these, and it seems unreasonable to make an armada of tiny extensions instead of letting them live happily in their own directory out of everyone's way.

For HTML 5, drop type="" attributes for CSS/JS This time done in a nice, centralized fashion, reducing LOC for callers even if HTML 5 is disabled. The implementation is a new Html class, similar to Xml but intended to be HTML-specific from the beginning instead of half-heartedly attempting to provide generic XML services but actually with lots of HTML-specific stuff tacked on. As part of the new Html class, a global config option $wgWellFormedXml is added. It's set to true by default, but if set to false, the Html class will drop some things that HTML 5 doesn't require, like self-closing " />" syntax and attribute quotation marks (sometimes).

Moved the IE content type checks to their own class. Disassembled IE 5 and 6 and added the results to the class. The entry points now return an array giving MIME types for all versions. The most important version difference is the introduction of an early check for PNG headers in IE 7. Added application/x-msdownload to disallowed types, haven't been able to reproduce any vulnerability, but it's better to be on the safe side.

My idea from C++ experience, bad practice in PHP. * Deferred skin initialisation in ParserOptions * Removed $wgMwRedir during an attempt to make MagicWord autoloadable. Didn't complete that, but removing the global is still the right direction.

Defer initialisation of the special page list, allow autoloading of the SpecialPage class. SpecialPage.php is not loaded for ordinary page views. Implemented some interfaces which allow special pages to do the same thing, although backwards compatibility is maintained. Old special page extensions will load SpecialPage during initialisation, so all extensions will have to be ported to get the full performance benefit.
